Abstract

            The phenomenon of phonetic harmony is used in classical texts, both in verse and prose. The Arabs resorted to changing some sounds to harmonize with a preceding or following sound, or within the context of a sentence. This was done to create a kind of harmony and coherence between the sounds, and to avoid the discord that would result from those sounds remaining unchanged. To achieve this harmony and coherence, and to avoid conflict and discord, and to strive for smoothness and ease of understanding, the Arabs did not even adhere to the grammatical marks that indicate meanings. Instead, they changed them without concern, in order to achieve the desired harmony between the sounds. If they found a way to achieve harmony, even if it meant deviating from the rules, they did not hesitate to do so, considering it a good choice and accurate decision. This made their language smooth and easy to pronounce, light on the tongue, pleasing to the ear, in line with their sensitivity and refined taste. The ease of transitioning between sound articulations in speech enhances the beauty, elegance, sweetness, and excellence of the language. When this beauty is combined with precision in meaning and skillful structure, it elevates the language to the utmost beauty and perfection. The Arabs took this into account in many aspects, including: adjacent sounds, harmony of pauses, and the consonance of sounds within a sentence, and so on.
